Sending forked smoke signals

A guest post from long-time reader J-Bob … who should not be confused with Bob, the Bluebird of Bitterness, who is a totally different gender:

The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is an 1172-mile project, starting at the northwest corner of North Dakota near Canadian border and ending at an existing oil terminal in Patoka, Illinois, about 60 miles east of St. Louis.

DAPL maps from J-Bob

DAPL has stirred opposition on three fronts:  1. The Sioux tribe sees it as a threat to sacred burial grounds; 2. environmentalists worry about its impact on area water sources; and 3. infrastructure experts challenge its necessity.

Do the arguments against DAPL have merit?  Economists and cost-benefit analysts are better equipped to debate the third point, but what about the threat to grave sites and ground water tables?  Valid concerns?

Knee-jerks said “Hell No, DAPL has got to go!” then banded together with other errant moonbeams and indolent riff-raff for a massive show of public outrage and merriment.  And what did they do?  Surprise!  Partied hearty, smoked lots mota, swilled lotsa swag, got lotsa air-time, left behind lotsa trash and left someone else to pick up the clean-up tab.

Skeptics said “Not so fast!” then joined with other inquisitive minds to study a map of America.  And what did they find?  Surprise!  Lotsa pipelines transporting lotsa oil and natural gas, quite a few in North Dakota, by the way, with one pipeline – Northern Border Pipeline Co. – already crossing the disputed territory since 1983, with not a squawk from anyone.

Hmm.  Sioux tribe sending forked smoke signals?  Imagine that.

When you cast a stone, it’s best to know what it’s going to hit

As far as I can figure out, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe initiated the months-long, recently-ended, Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protests with the assistance of then-President Barack Obama.

Obviously, the protest failed to stop the DAPL.  But the protesters did more than waste their time.  They also blocked the main road to the tribe’s casino, resulting in a catastrophic drop in casino revenues.

Since the casino provides most of the jobs and money for social programs, the shortfall is going to harm the already impoverished community.

Allegedly, the tribe’s concern was that the DAPL would pose a threat to their water supply and violated sacred tribal lands.  But the environmental impact study showed the DAPL would not threaten tribal water.

However, pollution from all the protesters’ garbage and poo poses a real threat to local water quality once this spring’s rain hits.

Another alleged concern was that the DAPL violated “sacred” tribal land.  But the DAPL isn’t going over any tribal land.  Plus, the Standing Rock Sioux have their own oil wells with their own pipelines on the reservation, so hello.

A commenter posted this at the site listed below:  “This facile criticism of the Standing Rock protest ignores the realities of life on the res. It’s not all economics, power and influence. There is a vast cultural tradition at play, and 500+ years of genocide and ecoside [sic] by invading Europeans. Think what it would be like if you [sic] favorite church or cathedral was overrun by industrial equipment and excavated for a pipeline carrying toxic liquids.”

The gist of the various replies is that no buildings were overrun by the pipeline.  Nor will the pipeline pass over any land owned by the tribe.  Plus, the Standing Rock Sioux weren’t in the area 500+ years ago.  They arrived in the 1800s and stole the land they are now on from the Arikara and Hidatsa tribes.

So What Are We Protesting Today?

Apparently I’m not the only one who noticed the #STOP (pick a name) signs Tuesday night:
Senator Finds Hilarious Proof Liberals Were Ready To Protest Any Trump SCOTUS Nominee
Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse found evidence that liberal protesters at the Supreme Court Tuesday were ready to protest any nominee put forward by President Donald Trump.
Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to be a Supreme Court associate justice.
Sasse found signs that read “Stop,” with Gorsuch’s name written in marker.

UC Berkeley cancels right-wing provocateur’s talk amid violent protest
“This is what tolerance looks like at UC Berkeley,” Mike Wright of Berkeley College Republicans, the group that invited Yiannopoulos to the campus, said outside the student union building as smoke bombs went off around him.
As he spoke, someone threw a glass bottle of red paint at him. The bottle shattered and splattered paint on his clothing. “It’s sad,” he said.

Thousands of protesters gather outside Chuck Schumer’s apartment
WHERE THE HELL DO THESE PEOPLE COME FROM?
Thousands of angry demonstrators gathered outside Sen. Chuck Schumer’s luxury Brooklyn apartment building — holding up signs and chanting “What the f–k, Chuck?!” — to protest his lukewarm stance on President Trump’s cabinet picks.
“Senator Schumer needs to know we’re watching him,” fumed Brad Wolchansky, a 40-year-old soccer coach from Flatbush who was carrying a cardboard cutout of a giant eye on Tuesday night.

Variety Writer Calls for Protests at Oscars: ‘Our Very Perception of Reality is Up For Grabs’
Gleibermann concedes that in recent years “Oscar-night advocacy has become, more often than not, a breed of self-abrogating kitsch…conforming to what I’m tempted to call the Susan Sarandon Principle: The bigger the star, the more off-putting — and therefore ineffective — the display of high-minded compassion.”
However, to Gleiberman, protesting President Trump is not about specifically policies but because Trump lacks empathy.

RNC Highlights Democrats’ ‘Hypocrisy’ Over SCOTUS Nominee Filibuster

The new video from the RNC includes clips of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Patrick Leahy (Vt.), and Sen. Warren. The clips come from a variety of television appearances and Senate floor speeches in which lawmakers urged their Republican colleagues to hold hearings and votes on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee from last year, Judge Merrick Garland.

Pioneer Times at the Bunkhouse

Water heater stopped working a couple days ago. Had to wait until today to call the landlord. Having DW call, because I might say the wrong thing and get us evicted from Casa Pistol. The driveway didn’t get shoveled after the last snow, so SS went out and shoveled by hand yesterday. We’re heating water on the stove to wash with, so we don’t go near anybody who isn’t family. All in all, a wonderful day. Today eldest is coming with her family. She had a houseful yesterday so we’re getting together today, when we can spend more time together.
In other news, Christmas was better for millions of Christians than it has been for years. What makes the mood brighter is that soon we’ll be rid of the hateful creature that’s been ruining the country for the last eight years.

Free Of ISIS, Christians In Qaraqosh And Bartella, Iraq Are Finally Able To Celebrate Christmas

The Iraqi Christian town of Bartella was liberated in October by Iraqi forces after two years of ISIS control. After ISIS took over the town, its residents were forced to flee to camps, and various Christian religious symbols at their church were destroyed. Shortly after the town was finally freed, a video of residents making a cross for their church and ringing the church bells for the first time in years went viral.

THE FAKE NEWS DOESN’T STOP, EVEN ON CHRISTMAS
Dem ‘Fake News’ Even On Christmas: RNC “Refers To Trump As ‘King’, Compares To Jesus”
Matt McDermott is a Democrat pollster and his own words pusher of ‘propaganda’. I think this qualifies:
What Matt McDermott apparently doesn’t understand is that Christians say this each year, welcoming the new King, Jesus. What it reveals is not that RNC is trying to pitch Trump as King, but that McDermott and other Democrats don’t understand this simple concept.
The response to the statement was swift. Jonathan Chait, a liberal writer for New York magazine, said, “The distinction between a president and a king is not trivial.” Kyle Griffin, a producer for MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” tweeted, “No joke—This line is actually in the RNC’s Christmas message.” And Politico reporter Glenn Thrush quoted the statement and wrote “#KEOTUS,” meaning “King-elect of the United States.”

Hillary’s Horribles
Yes, Clinton won the popular vote. Who cares? That was never, nor should it ever be, the measure that determines who is elected president. She knew it. Her supporters knew it. Her campaign knew it. They just chose not to campaign that way.
Call it arrogance or ignorance, but Hillary spent more time in California, a state she’d have won comfortably no matter what, than Wisconsin and Michigan in the final days of the election. She and her team made that choice, consciously. Just like she chose to call half of Trump’s supporters “a basket of deplorables” who, even worse, were “irredeemable.”

The Truth About the Pipeline

If you listen to the leftists media the Noble Red Man is standing up to the eeeevil oil people who are trying to desecrate their sacred land by ramming an oil pipeline though their burial grounds and fouling their drinking water. If you believe that crap, shame on you. An Obama-appointed judge ordered a halt to construction, setting off heap big celebration with much fire water and smokum heap big bowls of locoweed. Even a bunch of white eyes have gotten in on the fun, leading some Injuns to complain they were treating their gig like Burning Man.

Left Pushes Misinformation in War Against Dakota Access Pipeline
THE BUILDERS OF THE PIPELINE, ENERGY TRANSFER PARTNERS, HAD INVESTED $3.5 BILLION BEFORE THE INDIANS RAISED ANY OBJECTIONS
When it comes to the plight of the American Indian, liberal hypocrisy shines.
On Sunday, the anti-pipeline agitators gained something of a victory after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers refused to grant the project a permit needed to finish construction — the company will likely be forced to reroute the pipeline.
Their concern is hardly surprising, given the plethora of false stories and fake news regarding the protests. Indeed, one widely circulated story even asserted that police had been given the green light to shoot protesters.
Of course what these hysterical reports — which range from highly exaggerated to patently false — fail to mention is that some of these “peaceful” pipeline protests are anything but. Protesters have attacked police, set fires, and damaged private property.
Moreover, even those who are protesting peacefully do so for a shaky cause. The pipeline will not be constructed on native land, but on private property north of the Standing Rock reservation.
Nor will the pipeline harm the water supply, as it will be built underneath the Missouri River.
“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held 389 meetings with 55 tribes to confer on the DAPL. In addition, 29 open houses, public meetings, and regulatory hearings were held throughout the four states where the pipeline travels. The Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota even voted unanimously to approve the project on Dec. 2, 2015,” Kain wrote.
Given all of the evidence, it seems clear that resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline was drummed up by interests who stand to gain financially should the pipeline not be built.
It’s hardly surprising then that Russell Kirk, the traditionalist conservative intellectual and godfather of the American conservative movement, was a fierce proponent of the American Indian cause, and after the 1973 Wounded Knee incident reportedly said he would have stood proudly in arms with the members of the American Indian Movement.
No one can deny that Native Americans have a lot of things to be angry about — but the Dakota Access Pipeline isn’t one of them.

Trump Supports Dakota Pipeline And Will Review Obama’s Rejection
THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN
Trump has pledged to overhaul the nation’s energy policy in a way that favors energy companies, and a reversal of the pipeline decision would fulfill that pledge. He has also said he will find a way to reverse the Obama administration’s rejection of TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline.
The Trump administration can probably overturn the Corps’ decision in Dakota and issue the required easement soon after taking power, Elvira Scotto, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said in a note Sunday night.
Congress, too, may get involved. Asked Monday if lawmakers will challenge the Army Corps decision, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said, “I think we’ll get a new administration, we’ll get new eyes, and there’s always a possibility.”

Trump said he will revisit the decision to halt construction when he takes office
Protesters braved a heavy blizzard at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation
Camp cheered on Sunday when U.S. Army said it would halt project’s final stage
APPARENTLY, THE WHISKEY WAS RUNNING LOW
A group of Aztec dancers joined the march. One of the group, Sergio, told DailyMail.com: ‘We are here in solidarity against DAPL. We are here in celebration and prayer, showing support our brothers and sisters here in North Dakota.’
THEY PROBABLY SAID: THE HELL WITH THIS…WE’RE GOING BACK TO MEXICO, WHERE IT’S WARM!
This female protester, Brown Buffalo Calf Woman, said she believed the time had come for people to stand up and protect the water
Brown Buffalo Calf Woman….ISN’T THAT MICHELLE OBAMA’S INDIAN NAME?

White House (not the Army) halts Dakota Access Pipeline work yet again
HOW MUCH LONGER BEFORE WE GET RID OF HIM??
As NBC News was reporting yesterday, both Energy Transfer Partners (the owners of the project) and both of the state’s senators called foul and said that these delays and harassment would end once Obama leaves office.
Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the project, denounced the decision Sunday night as “a purely political action.”
Just to be clear, this obviously wasn’t a move which was made in a vacuum by the CoE. This came straight from the White House with the backing of the Justice Department. It was over a month ago when the Army began making noises about “looking at an alternate route” in response to the protests. But keep in mind that the current route is the one which the Army already approved and it was that approval which formed the basis for the state Public Service Commission’s decision to provide final approval. That approval was twice challenged in court and upheld both times.
