Covering Flynn

2020_05 13 media malpractice

These people remind me of the Soviet media, about which the people said, “There is no news in Pravda and no truth in Novosti.” In Russian, pravda means truth while novosti means news.

2017: The FBI goes after Trump’s National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn.

  • The liberal media danced with joy over the possibility that what they called “the biggest scandal since Iran-Contra” would bring down the Trump administration.

Jan. 14, 2020: Flynn moved to withdraw his guilty plea for lying to the FBI during his January 2017 interview with federal prosecutors. The motion cited “bad faith, vindictiveness, and a breach of the plea agreement’ by the government.

  • ABC, CBS, NBC combined evening news coverage: ZERO seconds.

March 15, 2020: President Trump tweeted, “So now it is reported that, after destroying his life & the life of his wonderful family (and many others also), the FBI, working in conjunction with the Justice Department, has ‘lost’ the records of General Michael Flynn. How convenient. I am strongly considering a Full Pardon!’”

  • ABC, CBS, NBC combined evening news coverage: ZERO seconds.

April 29, 2020: Newly revealed internal FBI documents show that then-FBI Director James Comey, then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and then-former head of counterintelligence Bill Priestap met in January 2017 to discuss the Flynn case. “What is our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired? If we get him to admit to breaking the Logan Act, give facts to DOJ + have them decide.”

  • ABC, CBS, NBC combined evening news coverage: ZERO seconds.

May 7, 2020: Americans who depend on ABC, CBS, and/or NBC for their news were shocked to learn that the DOJ was recommending the case against Flynn be dismissed.

  • ABC, CBS, NBC combined evening news coverage: 7 minutes and 51 seconds. None of them showed viewers the exculpatory evidence proving Flynn had been railroaded by the FBI.

May 9, 2020: An audio recording of a phone call made by Obama is leaked in which he says, “And the fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk.”

  • CBS and ABC report on the call without pointing out that Flynn had been charged with lying to the FBI (not perjury) or that the case was being dropped due to evidence of malicious prosecution.
