REDEEM TEAM: [8:14] – In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz simplifies the complex theology behind the Immaculate Conception. Mama Buzz just sent this to me and I loved it, so here it is.
Obviously, I want my fellow Catholics to watch it. I taught RCIA for 5 years and I still learned some cool stuff!
But I also hope my precious non-Catholic readers will watch it too. I’m not out to proselytize anybody; I sincerely believe we should each be in the church the Holy Spirit chooses.
I’m not looking for anyone to assent to the doctrine, but rather just to accurately understand it.
There’s far too much “fake news” out there about Catholic doctrine. I believe this hinders us from being strong allies in this spiritual war we’re fighting.
BORN ALIVE: [2:35] – A Senate committee held a hearing on pro-life “born-alive” act.
IMMIGRATION: [3:55] – The Justice Department has sued the State of New Jersey and King County, Washington (where Seattle is located) over their “sanctuary” policies on immigration.
Attorney General William Barr said: “Unfortunately, in various jurisdictions, so-called ‘progressive’ politicians are jeopardizing the public’s safety by putting the interests of criminal aliens before those of law-abiding citizens.”
BABYLON BEE: Spygate Update – Congressional Democrats are calling for a new investigation into the investigators investigating the original investigators. The investigation will center around claims that the investigators assigned to investigate the investigators may show significant bias, with the new investigators investigating the investigation investigators attempting to determine if there has been any prejudice or corruption in the investigation investigation.
PRO-USA: A high school principal told his students not to fly the “offensive” US flag from their vehicles anymore when they drive to school. The next day, the students formed a caravan. Each vehicle carried a US flag.
The principal has apologized and admitted it’s not against the rules to fly a flag.
ANTI-SEMITISM: Linda Sarsour is a Muslim political activist of Palestinian descent. Mehdi Hasan is a British political journalist who works full-time for Al Jazeera.
- Sarsour: She has praised the Muslim Brotherhood, calling them the “coolest,” and said the Nation of Islam, an organization headed by rabid anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, is integral to the history of Islam in America. She admires Remi Kanazi, a Palestinian-American poet, who has denounced Israel as an apartheid state and compared it to Iran and North Korea. In 2011, she tweeted that Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Brigitte Gabriel were “asking 4 an a$$ whippin’. I wish I could take their vaginas away – they don’t deserve to be women.”
- Hasan: The following is from a sermon he gave in 2009: “The kuffar, the disbelievers, the atheists who remain deaf and stubborn to the teachings of Islam, the rational message of the Koran; they are described in the Koran as ‘a people of no intelligence’, Allah describes them as not of no morality, not as people of no belief – people of ‘no intelligence’ – because they’re incapable of the intellectual effort it requires to shake off those blind prejudices, to shake off those easy assumptions about this world, about the existence of God. In this respect, the Koran describes the atheists as ‘cattle’, as cattle of those who grow the crops and do not stop and wonder about this world.”
ANTI-CATHOLICISM: The Little Sisters of the Poor are returning to the U.S. Supreme Court for a third time. They’ve already twice defended their right not to comply with the Obamacare requirement that employers provide free contraceptive coverage in their health insurance.
In 2018, the Trump administration issued a new rule that contains an exemption for religious ministries. It was written specifically to support the Supreme Court’s 2016 ruling. This did not sit well with activists. Several states—including California, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey—sued the federal government and targeted the Little Sisters in particular.
The Little Sisters are not trying to stop the states from providing free contraception: they are asking that they not be forced to provide it themselves. Oddly enough, California and Pennsylvania already have programs to provide contraceptives to women who want them, but they still want to force nuns to provide them, too.
GENDER: Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, IL, issued a pastoral guide on gender identity and how it relates to diocesan policies. “Gender dysphoria is a real psychological condition, in which a biological male or female believes he or she is the opposite gender,” Paprocki noted. “It is of paramount importance to handle such situations with gentle and compassionate pastoral skill and concern.”
But he also added: “A person should accept and seek to live in conformity with his or her sexual identity as determined at birth.”
