FORGIVENESS: It’s like selling a mortgage – Understanding this has made forgiving people infinitely easier for me. Here’s how it works.
When someone takes out a mortgage, they become a debtor to the bank. If the bank sells the mortgage to someone, the bank not only receives some kind of payment, but also no longer has to be concerned with either the debt or the debtor. Meanwhile, the debtor still owes the full amount. He just owes it to someone else.
When I forgive someone, it’s like I am the bank who chooses to sell to God my share of whatever repentance and recompense another’s sin against me requires. In exchange, I not only receive forgiveness for my own sins, but also I am freed from all the negativity that goes along with holding on to grudges.
Forgiving does NOT mean that that what that person did was okay. If it was okay, it wouldn’t need forgiving! No, forgiving just means the person now owes 100% of the “sin mortgage” to God alone.
