“My” Lourdes Miracles

In a comment on the story about church vandalism, Mindful Webworker mentioned reading up on St. Bernadette at Wikipedia. It reminded me of the lady I know who was miraculously and instantaneously cured in the water. I thought I’d share with y’all today.

My friend had a malignant tumor on her face. It had been removed twice, but had come back a third time. The first two surgeries had been done so skillfully that I had never noticed the scarring until she showed me the edges and then, yeah, it was a little shiny on that patch.

The third was going to disfigure her, but she was a WWII nurse, eminently practical, and not in the least vain, so she just said, “Okay, but I promised my friend I’d go with her to Lourdes, so it’ll have to wait until after the trip.”

She says it never crossed her mind to ask for a healing for herself. She was there for her friend. Maybe it’s a nurse thing. Anyway, her friend went down the steps into the water with two helpers, crossed the small pool, got dunked completely under the water, came back, and climbed out.

Then she insisted my friend go too. She demurred, but the other lady insisted, so she went. But when she climbed up the steps to leave the pool, the two aides and her friend became very excited because she was COMPLETELY DRY. Hair, clothes, everything.

She says she still didn’t think that much about it. It was interesting and all, but whatever. It was the next morning, when her friend SHRIEKED upon seeing her that the real excitement began. “Your FACE!” She went in to look in the bathroom mirror.

Her face was totally healed.

She didn’t want to get involved with the long Lourdes process of reporting and investigating a miraculous healing [https://www.lourdes-france.org/en/recognition-miracle/].

So she just came home and talked to our pastor. He told her to wait and see if the cancer came back before she told others.

Three years after the healing, she decided to open up and started with the RCIA Core Team at our summer picnic.

I had known her for years before and continued to know her for years after. I lost touch after she moved into a retirement home. The tumor never returned.

This video describes the 69th confirmed miraculous healing at Lourdes. The investigation went on for 21 years before the declaration was made.

The Song of Bernadette (1943) is a reverent drama that tells the story of Bernadette Soubirous (later canonized Saint Bernadette) who, from February to July 1858 in Lourdes, France, reported eighteen visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a grotto . The sanctuary at Lourdes was built on the site. The healing waters flow from a spring Bernadette discovered in the grotto.
