I texted the link to this post to my daughters, two of whom are professional journalists. Silly me thought they’d get a kick out of it. I got back a really snarky text from one of them about how much time she wastes removing Oxford commas from other people’s writing so it can be published. Apparently, the style guide they use doesn’t allow it. This goes a long way toward explaining why I found so many pro- and anti-Oxford comma memes on the internet!

I sympathize with your daughters. I also have to remove Oxford commas when I edit for the newspaper. The AP stylebook is what we use.

I googled “AP Oxford comma” and got a thing that said the AP style book “does not require the Oxford comma. You and dd suggest it’s more like “bans the Oxford comma.” ?

My style book requires the Oxford comma. When I proofread/copy edit, I insert them where they are lacking.

Milady Webworker notes that one could substitute the Shatner comma for the Walken comma without change.

The texts this morning were really flying amongst myself and my 3 Catholic school educated daughters, two of whom are professional journalists.
Both trained and worked in military PR, one still does while the other one went civilian and is now a SAHM with a monthly column in the magazine she used to write for.
The still-military daughter reported that her PR office is a hot bed of nerdy, military-minded, punctuation and grammar Nazis. The pro- and anti-Oxford comma is a frequent bone of contention, with my kid preferring the Oxford! Makes Mommy proud!
I told her it was a good thing I wasn’t a journalist, cuz not using the Oxford would bug the heck out of me. She concurred, but reported they’d had a Grammar Off recently and she won. LOL
I explained the rationale I use for my wonky, idiosyncratic blogging style and she declared it was perfect for a blog. Wise woman, agreeing with Mommy. 😉
