Coaches at Cromwell High School are thrilled with freshman Andraya Yearwood, whose speed compared to biological girls makes the student a star.
Andraya clocked times of 11.99 seconds and 26.34 seconds in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively, during the first meet of the season. Both times resulted in a first-place win.
“I have a spectacular female athlete,” coach Brian Calhoun told the Hartford Courant. “There’s nothing more to say. To approach it in any other way might create some sort of issue or conversation.”

To avoid any hurt feelings some people may feel by attempting to speak standard, correct English, Gallagher wants to eradicate the stigma associated with Ebonics — or African–American Vernacular English, a nonstandard dialect of English spoken by some black people.
“I want to center the voices of the people who need to be centered,” Gallagher, a participant in the UW-Madison writing fellows program, told The Daily Cardinal. “As a white-passing person, I have a lot of power and privilege that should be shared.”

That Ebonics thing is genuine racism. The real title should be, “Allow Ebonics because it will keep ghetto blacks in the ghetto where they belong.” NOBODY who doesn’t know how to speak and write properly can hope to succeed in any well-paying job, with the possible exceptions of pimping, drug dealing, pro sports and rap music.

Forty-plus years ago, I spent about a year living and working at a residential ministry that was designed to help at-risk young people. For the record, most were white, although we had a smattering of other races. Most came from broken homes, some had spent time in detention, many had never finished high school, some were alcoholics and/or drug abusers, and all were bound for pretty grim futures if they didn’t turn their lives around. ALL of them — including some on the staff! — spoke substandard English, and back in those days I was still naïve and idealistic enough that when I heard people abusing the English language, I corrected them. A few of the kids appreciated being corrected, as they had at least a rudimentary awareness that their deficiencies in that department were holding them back. But most of the residents, and even some of the staff, resented it and chalked it up to snobbery and elitism on my part. I tried to get them to see that we were not doing these kids any favors by ignoring their mangling of the language, and that by failing to correct them — or even to acknowledge the importance of speaking properly — we were actually contributing to the obstacles they faced in life. Not a good thing for kids against whom the deck is already stacked.

I corrected a journeyer’s pronunciation of “theologian” at an RCIA meeting and one of the Core Team members took me to task for it. I told her, and the whole group, that I had done it out of love. That fellow had told us he had “read” himself into the church over a course of 10 years. His knowledge of doctrine and church history was so good, we had him teach one of the classes! But he had NO experience with prayer or being part of a faith-based community. I corrected him because I was well aware of how intelligent he was (and is!) and didn’t want him to have anyone else discount him simply because he had never heard the word spoken before.
