THURSDAYS WITH FAMILY

Since the day I was having breakfast with my daughter and my cousin and uncle walked in the restaurant, we’ve been meeting every Thursday morning for breakfast. My cousin Trish brings her dad, sometimes her sister and niece, and today her son showed up, who went from a toddler the last time I saw him to a grown man. Trish also brought her latest romantic interest, and of course Uncle Roger is always there, grinning from ear to ear anticipating the memories.

It’s just breakfast, a seemingly innocuous thing, but it means the world to two old men I love dearly. Part of today’s discussion was the produce we raised on the farm and how Granny canned and froze everything. Then the price of produce today was compared to what it was back then. Roger talked about milking their old cow Lulabelle when he was a boy. Uncle Bob reminisced about an old Mercury he used to drive. Just idle chat with a bunch of old men. We all go dutch, since being cheap… uh… thrifty is a trait that is prevalent in our family. Thursday has become my favorite day of the week.

Indiana Gov. Pence signs religious objections bill

A window sticker on a downtown Indianapolis business, Wednesday, March 25, 2015, shows its objection to the Religious Freedom bill passed by the Indiana legislature. Organizers of a major gamers’ convention and a large church gathering say they’re considering moving events from Indianapolis over a bill that critics say could legalize discrimination against gays. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy)

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence on Thursday signed into law a religious objections bill that some convention organizers and business leaders have opposed amid concern it could allow discrimination against gay people.
The measure would prohibit state and local laws that “substantially burden” the ability of people — including businesses and associations — to follow their religious beliefs.

House passes Boehner-Pelosi Medicare deal in resounding vote
ANYTHING THAT BOEHLOSI COME UP WITH IS SUSPECT

The House on Thursday overwhelmingly voted to repeal automatic payment cuts to doctors under Medicare, endorsing a rare bipartisan deal that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) negotiated with Democrats.

The bill, which passed by a vote of 392-37, puts Congress on the precipice of ending a fight nearly two decades old over a formula known as the sustainable growth rate (SGR).

Since 2003, lawmakers have put off cuts under the Medicare formula 17 times, perennially punting the solution through short-term “fixes” that, over time, ran up the cost of abolishing the formula to nearly $200 billion dollars.

Five Facts About Proposed ‘Doc Fix’

I READ THIS…I STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF IT
Once the legislation clears the House, it will move to the Senate for final approval. That may take longer, as Senate Democrats object to other provisions in the legislation, especially language that would continue to block federal funds from paying for abortions

    • Called to check on Mom this afternoon, even though I knew she was fine.

She’s been in Oklahoma just about all of her 92 years (except some of WW2 in Kansas City, IIRC).

She says it’s a bad sign that we should have tornadoes this early. I defer to her experiental wisdom.

That tornado forming live on KFOR-TV was amazing. It was a great example of how you can have a cyclone cloud forming overhead, and multiple twister tails on the ground, and not actually be able to see the whirling winds connecting them. (The weatherman really got excited, understandably.)

June of 1974 was the first time Tulsa got hit by tornadoes. I was living on 35th Place, a few blocks from the river. One of the twisters ripped right down 36th Place, two blocks South, which was close enough my yard got trashed as well. One day, I bicycled through the neighborhood, admiring the pleasant old 1930s homes with many tall trees and neatly-kept yards. Two days later, I was bicycling around fallen tree branches, looking up though 2nd floor windows at sky. One house had the whole West side of it gone, but everything inside pretty much fine; looked like a doll’s house.

Ah, I could go on and on about that night! You know how they say it sounds like a locomotive going overhead? A very loud locomotive. Tornadoes always had my respect, but after that one, most assuredly!

“has none” … you got that right. Dearest was telling me today that Cornell’s official word on the Project Veritas expose is, “They made it up!” He wanted to know who believes that stuff.

I reminded him that the Bible predicts a day when God will reveal Himself clearly to all human beings, so there will be no question in anyone’s mind who He really is, but that sinners will still CHOOSE to reject Him.

That thing about “I’d believe in God if I had proof He exists” is crap. Satan KNOWS God exists! It’s not about knowing; it’s about choosing who to serve.

Leftists serve the Prince of Lies. They love lies. They have no trouble believing James O’Keefe fabricated the video, because it’s exactly the kind of thing THEY do. I’m guessing that if you asked any of them, “Did you watch the video yourself?”, they’d say, “I’m not going to watch that pack of lies!”

I once had an old friend become an ardent believer in reincarnation. For some reason, she made it a condition of our friendship that I accept it as well. She sent me a list of seven books I had to read; I had to order some of them from inter-state libraries, but I did it. AND I read them all carefully.

Then I read stuff from the other side and sent her ONE title to read. She wrote back, “I’m not going to read this. I’ve read books like it. They’re all full of crap.”

The friendship had been rocky for 3 years because of this reincarnation thing, but that refusal to even read one book for me killed it dead. We met in college. I had always assumed she respected my intelligence and academic integrity. So “I don’t need to read the book you read and thought was good because I already know it’s crap” was a big slap in the face … and the last straw.

It still makes me sad. She had been my maid of honor and godmother to one of my kids. But how can you be friends with someone who thinks you’re an idiot?

      Like

      • Wow… you read seven books on reincarnation for this (supposed) friend? I’m impressed! I’ve never read that many books for anyone (other than a teacher who could flunk me if I failed to do the assigned reading).

I love it when people flatly refuse to read/watch/listen to anything that contradicts what they believe, on the basis that they already know it’s a bunch of crap, because it was written/said by someone who disagrees with them, and anyone who disagrees with them is by definition a blithering idiot who has nothing of value to contribute to the discussion.

I had to special order and pay for one of the books [Reincarnation in Christianity by Geddes MacGregor] because no library stocked it. I went to my favorite bookstore, but the owner said, while he appreciated my reason for wanting the book, he refused to do business with that publisher because their book list was so anti-Christian. I had to go to one of those New Age stores full of crystals and people saying Namaste to buy it.

The gist of the book was that Jesus resurrection was the reason we can be sure that reincarnation is a Christian doctrine. Seriously. The books says that! Never mind that when Jesus rose, He was an adult with all His memories and everyone who knew Him recognized Him, while reincarnation is nothing like that at all.

It also claims that reincarnation is a “lost” teaching of Christianity and that the Bible we have now doesn’t teach it, because politics corrupted the text. Ahem … the Bible we have now is translated from 4th century manuscripts that pre-date the alleged time of corruption.

I still can’t quite wrap my mind around the fact that this friend I had once respected and enjoyed could read that crap without blushing with shame. She actually went further and pushed me to go through “past life regression therapy”, because according to her, my illness was “obviously” the result of bad karma. IOW, no need for compassion … blame the victim!

Watch: ‘Obama is Out of Control’

Democratic assemblyman slams Obama who is ‘desperate’ for a foreign policy accomplishment at Israel’s expense.
Defending Netanyahu’s opposition to the Iran nuclear deal being formulated, Hikind remarked that the prime minister “doesn’t work for Barack Obama, he does what’s good for the people of Israel.”

He noted that Obama doesn’t appear to “get that,” instead thinking Netanyahu should follow his will in pursuing an Iran deal, which the assemblyman suggested he is pursuing because “maybe he wants another Nobel prize.”

    Amendment by Consent

When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress earlier this month about the parameters of the secret negotiations between the United States and Iran over nuclear weapons and economic sanctions, how did he know what the negotiators were considering? Israel is not a party to those negotiations, yet the prime minister presented them in detail
The common themes here are government spying and lawlessness. We now know that the Israelis spied on Secretary of State John Kerry, and so Netanyahu knew of what he spoke. We know that the Clintons believe there is a set of laws for them and another for the rest of us, and so Mrs. Clinton could credibly believe that her deception and destruction would go unpunished.

WaPo Outraged Ben Carson Called Obama A “Psychopath,” Interviews Psychologist To Set Record Straight: Obama’s A “Sociopath”
WaPO EVER AT THE DEFENSE OF THE MUSLIM-IN-CHIEF

Lisa Kays, a licensed clinical social worker in Washington, said in a phone interview that to clinically be described as a psychopath, someone must show signs before age 15, and must meet three criteria from a list that includes things like deceitfulness, failure to plan ahead, consistent irresponsibility and a lack of remorse. There’s also the possibility of anti-social behavior, increased risk of violence, failure to conform to social norms and saying things for shock value.
