Many years ago, after my granddad retired, it didn’t take long being under granny’s foot when she tried to do her housework she issued an ultimatum… get a part time job or she’d make his life even more miserable than she already did. Being a fan of drinking beer, he got a job part-time tending bar at a tavern named Kelly Malone’s. Typical neighborhood place. Juke box, pool tables, a bowling machine and there was a moose head high on the wall,about 12-15 feet. St Patrick’s Day was like Christmas, New Years and the Fourth of July all rolled into one. The free corned beef and green beer flowed. It wasn’t a good day unless the local constabulary had to intervene at some point.
The second holiday he worked there he came home and said ‘You won’t believe what happened.’
‘What?’
‘Somebody got that damn moosehead down off the wall and stole it.’
It must have gotten really drunk outside. Imagine sobering up and finding a nasty,moth-eaten head in your living room and you can’t remember how it got there. Beer has been making people act stupidly for thousands of years.

While in Tokyo, the First Lady will meet with Mrs. Akie Abe, the Spouse of the Prime Minister of Japan, and deliver remarks on the importance both countries place on international girls education.
While in Cambodia, Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Bun Rany, the First Lady of Cambodia, will meet with high school students and hear directly how they benefit from community-led programs like Room to Read and the Peace Corps.

Shots Fired Into Crowd at St. Louis Metrolink Station
Police said an officer was driving near Delmar and Rosedale around 8:30 Sunday night when he noticed a large group of juveniles. there was another tavern on the next block where we’d go to sell fresh veggies and fruit from our garden.Well,I sold,granddad drank his beer.But I always got a genuine Italian beef dipped in juice and a coke for lunch.It was the best sammich I ever had.it was run by two guys named Ernie Grazioli and Whitey Marinelli.They had a B&W television behind the bar and a big antenna on the roof.We’d go ther sometimes when the cubs were home.The picture was awful,snowy and kept rolling,but we all watched it until Ernie got disgusted with the poor play of the alleged professional baseball players.He always had a cigar in his mouth and I never saw him light it.They asked us to grow them some zucchini,so we did.We had no idea you were supposed to pick them when they were about 10″ long.We just let them grow and they reached almost two feet long and weighed about 8 pounds.When we took them,I thought Ernie was going to have a stroke.They couldn’t use them,so we took them home.Having been through the Great Depression Granny never wasted anything.She sliced them,put them in a pot with some cooked hamburger meat,stewed tomatoes,onion and bell pepper.it was pretty good.

you can also cube it and fix it like mashed potatoes,with some milk,butter and brown sugar.Granny made Butternut squash that way.She’d halve acorn squash and bake them with brown sugar.We grew almost everything we ate.

The first year that the Cap’n and I were married I planted a little garden. We went away for 5 days in the summer and upon our return the Cap’n came flying into the house, just thrilled with the watermelon I had growing out back. But I didn’t plant a watermelon, I said. Turns out it was a cucumber, and I had planted the garden right over top of the septic tank.
