A note to my friend Jane Dough:

One of the features of the internet is that anyone can hide behind the anonymity of a monitor and live their Walter Mitty-like fantasies. I could claim to be a 25 year old,6’2″ mountain of molten lust. Unfortunately, regular visitors here know I’m a 63 year old,pot-bellied diabetic with a pacemaker and severe emphysema and sleep apnea. I may be ashamed of some of the things I’ve done in the past but I’m not ashamed of who I am.

Over the years I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of acquaintances but precious few friends. This blog is the extent of my ‘social networking.’

Chrissy and I put a great deal of time and effort into posting here because it’s a way to connect with others. We get paid nothing. It’s a labor of love and our reward is when people come back to visit or add something to the conversation when they’re so moved. It’s our way of feeling like we can make a difference, albeit a small one. CtH is a master of graphics and articles of faith. I can only copy and paste links to inform, entertain, outrage and sometimes I can make a comment that’s snarky or funny.

GP,Ting and I go all the way back to the old Hillbuzz days and later at M4U. They’ve seen me at my best and as close to the bottom as you can get and still be above ground.  Since coming here I’ve gotten close to Chrissy and BoB and I’ll cherish their friendship forever.

I probably would not get in a democrats’ face because here in Illinois Dems run the state from top to bottom so neither party wastes much time or money here. The entire state is red but Cook County controls all the power and takes our taxes to feed the public union beast. It’s been that way pretty much since the days of Big Bill Thompson in the 1920’s.

I came from a rural community, hate big cities, traffic and big crowds. I would never instigate a confrontation but as I get older I find I care less and less what people think. I know who and what I am and I have few regrets.

Individually we can do nothing to change things, but together maybe we can hold on to the freedoms we took for granted for so long that are being stripped away for a little longer. That’s why I do this.

Pics of The Day: Mooch Gets Her Groove On…

U.S. first lady Michelle Obama dances with students from turn around schools during a talent show at the East Room of the White House May 20, 2014 in Washington, DC. President Obamas Committee on the Arts and the Humanities held the first-ever White House Talent Show featuring performances by major artists and showcase the talents of students from schools participating in the Turnaround Arts program which helps to turn around low-performing schools and increase student achievement through arts education.

Answer:they don’t give a damn. The teachers’ union calls the tune and they dance to it.

Carney on VA Scandal: If The ‘Allegations’ Are Proven True, People Will Be Held Accountable

How many veterans died waiting for care?
What more evidence do we need?

We have to wait until these ‘allegations’ (used repeatedly by Carney today) are proven true?

‘Price Is Right,’ ‘The View’ fans outraged at timing of President Obama’s speech on VA hospital scandal

The President’s speech over VA hospitals’ alleged wrongdoing interrupted the 11 a.m. television hour via breaking news interruption. These interruptions are typically decided on by networks, but angry Twitter posts from fans were aimed at Obama nonetheless.
I can remember even back when granny was alive,if anything interrupted her ‘stories’ on daytime TV (and there were only 3 channels then) she’d cuss in ‘grannyspeak’,which is cussing without the good swear words because there were little kids around.

    • “…she’d cuss in ‘grannyspeak’,which is cussing without the good swear words because there were little kids around.”

Woman who used to care for my little sister would say, “Well, shoot a blue bean.” That was so funny to us. It was years before I realized that was, well, grannyspeak for something else.

My friend’s mom said “damn it all to fish hooks.” [Not sure what something else is for shoot a blue bean …. not sure I should ask lest Mindful actually tells me!]

        • not sure I should ask

What, Shoot a blue bean? I… I just assumed, same as, you know, “oh, shoot,” or “Sheesh!” or “Shut my mouth!” or “Shinola.” Right? 🙄

Know what? Trying to be clean in one’s lingo — as if thoughts matter — saying “Oh, Heavens!” instead of the other place, or “Bless it!” instead of condemnation, and, especially, saying the Lord’s name but meaning it… is no easy task when you’ve practiced as hard as um, er, as hard as some folks have practiced cussing.

First of all, you get weird looks because you sound like some Mennonite church lady…

(Happy to hasten to add, some of the nicest, hardest working, most devout people I know are Mennonite. And I’m pretty sure if they swear, it’s damn well appropriate. Oops.)

What a coincidence! Key states set to announce premium rate increases for 2015
Obama administration snuck the mechanism and $3.5 billion in funding for an insurer bailout, bypassing Congress and wheedling insurance companies to keep 2015 premiums low. The Hill’s report on the announcement dates for rate hikes explains the timing of this effort. Thirteen states will announce the newly approved rate plans for 2015 — including a handful of those Democrats desperately need to keep in the midterms

There’s nothing to say that hasn’t already been said.

Director of Phoenix VA Hospital Where Vets Died from Delays Received $8,500 Bonus in April (Update: Bonus Rescinded)
It had been previously reported that Helman received more than $9,000 in bonus pay in 2013 on top of her annual salary of $169,900. The VA office of inspector general began investigating the Phoenix VA for wrongdoing in December 2013, months before Helman received the additional $8,500 bonus.

    Hard Times for Obama Voters

Recent college grads, and especially African-Americans, struggle to find work in a slow recovery.
The great irony of the Obama era is that the President’s base voters have disproportionately suffered from a sputtering economy, while the wealthy that Mr. Obama likes to criticize have enjoyed a booming stock market. A new study shows just how difficult this era has been for some of the President’s most loyal supporters.

    Rise of the ‘Obama Republicans’
What has altered the storyline in the past several years is not the emergence of the Tea Party but rather the permanent entrenchment of Big Government Republicans, aka Obama Republicans.
They have bought into Obama’s Oligarchy of big business and big government doing business together, at the expense of the little guy.

NBC’s ‘Today’ Gives More Time to Malia Obama Driving Than VA Scandal; ABC’s ‘GMA’ Edits Out Criticism of President

Meanwhile, the morning show devoted one minute and nineteen seconds to First Daughter Malia Obama learning to drive this summer.

Three Reasons Why Obama Didn’t Dump Shinseki
For Obama to fire Shinseki at this point is to admit his own inadequacy and to reveal what I assume to be true: that Obama was not paying personal attention to the VA and not cracking the whip.

unless Obama replaces him with John McCain, that would mean weeks of heated discussion about the nominee, a heightened focus on the issue, and dramatic Senate hearings – all as we approach Election Day 2014. Not good for Obama and the Democrats.

3.I think Obama feels bad for Shinseki
But caring is not enough. The issue is too big.
The health of our veterans is more important than Eric Shinseki’s feelings

How Obama Became the Superhero of Excuses
You helped elect an untested presidential candidate, a man almost as liberal as you. He promised to heal the oceans, make health care an inalienable right, and transform Washington’s toxic culture. You mocked Republicans, independents, and squishy Democrats who had the audacity to criticize your guy, much less doubt the inevitability of his victory. President Obama won—twice—and then didn’t live up to anybody’s expectations, including his own.

The Fates Hate Obama and You Pay the Price
Even the weather refuses to cooperate with Obama.

So who can blame the GOP for spurning him?

That’s how much he’s been abandoned by the fates.

And we pay the price for his gamble on his destiny, his legacy, his lie.

It’s ironic that at a time when Wall Street has been adjusting expectations for the economy because of moderately cold weather—like THAT’s never happened before– Obama is banging the drum for more draconian cuts to our great American-supplied fossil fuels.

He cites global warming as the culprit.

Carol Costello and her two clerical guests slammed “climate change deniers” on Wednesday’s CNN Newsroom. Costello pointed out a recent sarcastic Tweet by Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak on the climate change issue that “sparked a firestorm,” and spotlighted how “religious leaders are more than concerned about statements like that. They’re now battling climate change deniers on moral grounds.”

The anchor turned to Reverend Mitchell Hescox of the Evangelical Environmental Network and CNN religion commentator Father Edward Beck as her one-sided panel on the topic, and accused the “deniers” of not only eschewing science, but also being unfaithful to Scripture:
So now if you don’t buy into the climate change hoax, you’re being unfaithful to Scripture?

    From Dr. Ben Carson:
In Politics, Sometimes Pragmatism Trumps Principle
If conservatives are going to win in 2014 and 2016 and preserve the environment of freedom to which we have grown accustomed, it will be necessary to learn how to prioritize issues.

    • “Sometimes Pragmatism Trumps Principle”?

Didn’t actually click through, so, I’m replying just based on that one sentence, but I have to ask:

      Then what value is principle?

If a higher principle can trump a lower, that I can certainly understand (principle of defense, especially of others, trumps principle of not killing, for a simplistic example), but abandoning principle to win never seems, well, principled. It’s compromising with evil, isn’t it? (Which diabolical pact, like “reaching across the aisle” means one side does all the “compromising.” Hence, the term, “compromised.”)

This is a debate I see a lot about the Tea Party, the Republicans, the RINOs, and what it takes to “win.” The folks who want to go along to get along don’t seem to listen too well to the history (e.g. Reagan) of standing up for principle and how it actually wins big. “Don’t sound like one of what McCain called kooks” they take as a serious consideration.

I was as glad as anybody to hear Dr. Carson spoil Obama’s digestion at the prayer dinner, and I admire Carson’s story, naturally, but politically he’s been willing to “bend” principle on the 2nd Amendment as well, so I can’t give him more than about a 5 out of a possible 9.

I will grant, though, that perhaps, unlike most people, he just might be educable. (For some reason, I am reminded of of Jesus telling the Scribe, you’re not far from the truth.)

How Conservatives Can Defeat the Media
One unavoidable truth that must be faced regarding the media and 2014 is this: the American media has the conservatives’ number. They know exactly where the blind spots are, which are the most sensitive points, and how to do the most damage. And they have absolutely no compunction about taking advantage of it.
The point is to win elections, not to be sneered at by Huffpo or made a punchline by Maher or Colbert. Too many conservatives lose sight of this in favor of cheap, momentary points. Too many rank and file conservatives act as if ideological purity has to be displayed every last second under every conceivable circumstance.
In the end, only one truth matters: the media is a machine designed to destroy conservatives. Eventually, it will be destroyed in its turn. Until then, it must be counteracted with vigilance, energy, and care.

I’m feeling a little bit of optimism about defeating Eric Cantor in his primary in 3 weeks. It’s still a long shot but I’m sensing a turn of the tides. Dave Brat is his opponent and the great thing is that he is a really, really good guy in his own right, and not just as the anti-Eric. I went to a town hall Dave had tonight and there were about 50 people there – a good turn-out. Most of them had previously worked for Eric, but they have had enough. I wrote a check, got some yard signs and signed up to work the polls on election day. Chrissy and Pete do their part, and I don’t have their talents, but I’m doing my part, too.

Did I mention that Dave teaches economics and ETHICS at a local college? We need more like him.
