PETE’S PAGE; HAPPY HANUKKAH, THANKSGIVING

Posted by Pistol Pete

Tomorrow is one of those rare times when Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fall on the same day.

First off,my thoughts and prayers go out to Chrissy,Ting and any lurkers who may be faced with 6-12 inches of global warming by tomorrow.

This is the time of year I remember most fondly and miss Granny the most. Many of my happiest hours were spent breaking up the stale bread into her double roaster for the dressing and smelling the necks and giblets she cooked for an entire day so they would be tender enough to cut up and go into the concoction with celery, apples, and whatever else she used. Her fruit salad (which uncle Roger still talks about) was made of bananas, grapes, tangerines, apple and pears in kind of a milky mayonnaise fluid. She always had pumpkin, mincemeat and banana cream pie along with aunt Evelyn’s German chocolate cake. We’d always have 35-40people,but no one was ever turned away. We’d go out to milk and do chores, like every other day,and when we came in a few hours later the glorious smell of roasting turkeys wafted through the house.

After dinner me,my cousin Bobby, and my retarded cousin Scott would go out to the compost pile behind the barn to look for holes. Compost absorbs heat and reptiles, being cold-blooded, would burrow into it to survive the winter. We’d roll up our sleeves and stick our arms into these holes and feel for garter or corn snakes which we’d chase our sisters with. We knew we’d get walloped for doing it,but it was fun anyway. Sometimes Bobby would bring his BB gun and we’d sit by the barn gate and take potshots at the breed bulls’ balls. Boy,did that piss him off. Grandpa was none too pleased, either, since I guess that bull served a purpose. All I knew was every time I got near it he’d chase me. Guess he held a grudge.

Many Thanksgivings have come and gone since those days and I’ve spent them in different ways with different people. But the day is not about food, football games or parades. It’s about giving thanks to Almighty God for all you’ve been blessed with and sharing with the ones you love most, and thinking of them when you can’t be there with them.

FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, GOD BLESS AND KEEP EACH AND EVERY ONE WHO PASSES BY HERE.

So HealthCare.gov was a flop, but WhiteHouse.gov/turkey works great
Bet they didn’t spend $660 million on it,either.

    • Going down into the Grand Canyon is on my after-the-bucket list. I’m never going to get there before, but I firmly believe God will create for us a wonderful New Earth with all the best of everything. Dinosaurs, too. I want to take my grandkids to see dinosaurs, for real. And watch a star form. It’s gonna be great!

Tofurkey is vile (yep, tried it). Just eat the turkey if you want turkey, and eat tofu if you want tofu (it’s good with soy sauce and green onion).

    • Hoping we get canned venison for Christmas again this year. I guess it depends if the sil’s family has a good hunting season and dd has time what with her last finals and all. Big news! Our “not scholastically inclined” kid … the who loved art, music and gym but book larning came hard … she’s GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE next month! Bachelor’s degree.

She got an Associate’s … took 3 years and a major bribe in the form of a poodle puppy to get her to stick it out. But I wanted her to finish, more because it was so hard for her than because the degree would make a difference in her earning power. Finishing something hard is one of those things nobody can take away from you. It’s your for always. Then she up and joined the Marines and went to war! So yeah … not afraid of a challenge! LOL

Please pray for her. The parasitic infection she picked up in Iraq has reared its ugly head again. She has had multiple surgeries to deal with it in her lung and both eyes. They thought they got it all, but she’s got a spot on her lungs again.

Thanksgiving dinner: eat this, not that.
How many calories does it take to induce the average American’s Thanksgiving food coma? About 4,500—that’s what the Calorie Control Council estimates most of us consume during our annual holiday feast.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am traveling tomorrow, but the worst of the bad weather should be over, and I am heading east, so there should be no problems. But thanks for your prayers, Pete! Your descriptions of past Thanksgivings at the farm sure made me hungry, until I got to the part about the snakes…But I think that fruit salad sounds heavenly. Did she ever write down the recipe of the “milky mayonnaise fluid?”

Prayers for Chrissy, too, because I think she has a more likely chance of dealing with the bad weather than I do.

    • We’re tucked up safe at home! Dearest is going to his folks’ house in western MA on Friday, will get to visit with two dear cousins we rarely see but love a lot, catch up with family, stuff his face and consult with his brother about their house project. We took today and tomorrow off to just putter around doing stuff together. Got the tree up, canned some more apple smash, Skyped with the Alaskas … I made Lil Buzz laugh singing the Wheels on the Bus and making monster attacks hands at his image on the screen with suitable growly noises. It felt good. Bunny “talked” with me. She’s so chatty! Unfortunately, she and Buzz are still talking their “twin” language, which nobody else understands. They’re both getting speech therapy. One of these days, they’re going to bust out in polysyllabic paragraphs and my dd is going to be holding her aching ears, longing for those bygone days when they shut up once in a while. LOL Mama Buzz sent some super cute pics of them. I’ll try to post after Dearest leaves. Maybe whatever is wrong with WP will be fixed by then.
