Our national nightmare: week 2

(The following appeared on Planet Moron on October 7, 2013.)

Driving south on the George Washington Parkway Friday night we noticed the Park Service had already replaced the barricades on the scenic overlook/vacant parking lot that someone (not us, we swear) had taken down.

As the government shutdown enters its second week, scenes such as that were repeated all over the country, as guards removed vets who were attempting to look at the Vietnam Memorial, which consists of a wall of granite set into a hill outside in the open mall that runs from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Building that was otherwise open.

Likewise, barricades were placed around the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. These were pushed aside by the vets who had actually taken Iwo Jima in the first place despite, if we remember our history correctly, Japanese positions heavily fortified with orange cones and withering displays of yellow police tape.

Additionally, the feds also closed large parts of the ocean, tried to block people from seeing Mt. Rushmore, and physically pushed an alternative rock singer who was already peacefully leaving the Jefferson Memorial as asked with the explanation that “it’s quicker this way.”

He was just following orders. With relish.

And of course, the National Park Service continues to live up to its sacred and solemn duty to close down valid businesses operating legally on leased federal lands, throwing scores of people out of work.

They still want you to, “see America first,” they just want you to do it at a discreet distance.

As you can see, you cannot possibly expect the federal government to have the resources to benignly ignore these completely open areas during a shutdown. Only when the government is fully up and running and everyone is on the job do they have the time and personnel to do nothing. Really, they have no choice during these lean times to vigilantly barricade and enforce arbitrary restrictions on open areas.

Here at Planet Moron we believe it’s time we all do our part in helping the National Park Service, the Capitol Police, and everyone else charged with ensuring we are unnecessarily inconvenienced. To that end, we offer these suggestions:

When passing federal properties, be they monuments, buildings, scenic vistas, or obscure plaques be sure to avert your eyes. There’s just not any money available for you to look at these things.

When driving through federal lands that have not yet been barricaded try not to breathe. That’s government air, and they can’t guarantee it.

Consider not listening to the radio or watching TV. Those airwaves belong to the government, broadcasters are only permitted to use them under license.

You might also want to consider not using your cellphone. Sure, your carrier paid for use of those airwaves, but, they belong to the government, and the government is closed.

Suggest to the airlines that they might want to change their flight paths so as not to inadvertently fly over federal land. Why? Because closed.

Some readers might be annoyed to learn that a bill we had mentioned last week that would ensure furloughed federal employees would get paid for not working passed the House unanimously.

But, hey, at least elderly people are being thrown out of their own homes.

Scary bugs and brain dead reporters

The scary bugs news story is that it’s been a bumper year for the deadly giant hornet and folks in Shaanxi Province are getting badly injured and even killed by these apocalyptically creepy bugs with ginormous stingers and toxic venom.

Giant hornet queen

This video news story said the attacks were in “northwest” China.

Shaanxi is pretty darn close to being right in the center of China. It’s kinda north, but definitely not west.

Shaanxi Province, China

But the super duper seriously humongous MEGA FAIL goes to CNN which first off appears to place the attacks in HONG KONG with a brief story that says, “Disturbing story out of China …” with this screen and no further information about the actual location of the attacks in China.

2013_10 07 CNN Hong Kong

Then, having goofed that bit up, they take it further and try to “ejukate” us all about “Where in the world is Hong Kong?” with THIS graphic:

2013_10 07 CNN puts Hong Kong in So Amer

Ummmmmmmm … that would be SOUTH AMERICA which is, you know, like a-whole-nother CONTINENT from ASIA where Hong Kong is … besides which the hornets aren’t in HONG KONG EITHER.

Aren’t these brain-dead Leftists the same people who honked and snorted at “dumb” Sarah Palin because she said “country” instead of “continent” when talking about Africa? (Which is totally Not At All like saying there are 57 states in America. Or something.)

More SPITE from our oh-so-mature Democrat “leaders”

2013_10 GOP votes to fund vets Reid blocks

The Spite House decided a government shut-down meant that extra cops and resources needed to be allocated to Barry-cade the open-air monuments in DC lest expected World War II and Vietnam War Honor Flight veterans get in and … you know … look at them, have pics taken, lay a wreath or two.

2013_10 Commissaries closed, golf course open

But just so we are all Very Clear that Øbama Democrats believe they can shove their thumbs in our eyes whenever and wherever they choose, they’ve given the go-ahead to a planned protest called “Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform” on the otherwise Barry-caded National Mall.

2013_10 08 WWII monument opened for illegal aliens

The event is hosted by several immigration activist groups, plus the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the AFL-CIO, all big contributors to Democrat war chests. About 30 members of Congress are expected to attend the rally, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.

2013_10 Leno - Everything's closed but our borders

This is impossible to justify in terms of any “government shutdown.” However, if you assume that Obama and the Democrats regard illegal aliens as their constituents and WWII vets as NOT their constituents, then it makes a kind of sick sense. Emphasis on SICK.

Obamacare Just Gave Me A Death Sentence

EXCERPTS from  Obamacare Just Gave Me A Death Sentence by OneFedUpVoter:

I’ve had Blue-Cross/Blue-Shield of Michigan through my employer for more than 10 years.

With the implementation of Obamacare, my employer’s healthcare coverage is considered a ‘Cadillac’ plan.

This means that instead of being taxed on my actual salary, I will be taxed on my salary plus of the $12,000/year my employer pays for my premiums.

This puts me into a higher tax bracket that will add $4,000 extra per year to my tax bill … even if I don’t require any medical care at all. We’ll be lucky if we can keep our house

Last week, I received this Notification from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, dropping all coverage of compounded medications, specifically anything related to hormonal replacement.

2013_10 No compounded drugs allowed

The reason they are doing this is … because they can. They won the monopoly sweepstakes for health insurers in Michigan. No competition means they can do whatever they like.

I lost my mother last year to a hereditary condition related to a lack of certain hormones. I have been on compounded hormones for more than 4 years; without them, I have more than an 80% chance of developing this deadly disorder.

Contrary to Blue-Cross’s Notice, these compounded medications are not unsafe and there are NO adequate FDA approved alternatives I can take.

This has nothing to do with safety or efficacy; it has everything to do with profits. The disapproved compounded hormones are natural and unpatentable; the approved hormone substitutes are synthetic and bring in big bucks for Big Pharma.

To say my mother died, a horrible, slow, agonizing 20-year death would be an insufficient description of what happened to her. Now, due to Obamacare, I can look forward to the same.

I can’t afford the $4,000 extra taxes. How am I going to pay for these hormones?

Obamacare just gave me a very probable death sentence.

Americans proving to be not that dumb

October 7, 2013: As of midnight last night, Maryland’s O’care exchange had recorded:

  • 174,000 unique site visitors
  •  13,532 accounts successfully created
  •       566 health insurance applications submitted
  •       326 application approved and enrolled

Tweets:

  • 13,206 people soiled themselves when they found out how much affordable health care was going to cost for 326 to get it free.
  • So 0.2% of the visitors to the exchange in the Bluest and Closest to DC State bought insurance.
  • Maryland says it spent $200 Million setting up their exchange.
  • Bluest, closest state to DC epicenter can’t even get suckers to sign up for Obamacare.

2013_10 Remember who this man is

Some GOOD news … I saw this in the comments at Twitchy. (I refuse to go to Daily KOS so didn’t personally verify.)

Here’s a Daily Kos article complaining about the ACA because she CANNOT KEEP HER DOCTOR and discussing “An ugly new term that you’re going to be hearing a lot more about in the weeks to come. Very. Thin. Narrow. Networks. ”

AND a second comment in the post: “Here’s the second thing that disturbs me. The ACA policies are significantly more costly.”

THIS IS DAILY KOS PEOPLE. Granted her “solution” is single payer. But even DAILY KOS people are complaining about this travesty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only someone had tried to warn her that she couldn’t keep her doctor and that her friend’s insurance premiums might be going up…. but by all means, MORE GOVERNMENT is definitely the answer here since they’ve done such as great job with the ACA.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/10/07/1244849/-The-ACA-we-deserve-so-much-more

If the Democrat Media Complex had actually reported the NEWS when Zero Care was being debated, people like this would’ve known what the other options were for reforming health care, options presented repeatedly by Republicans, but not reported by the “journalistas” who chanted, “Republicans have no plan. Republicans just want people to die.”

Lefting the hearts and minds of your kids

The federal government is shoving the “Common Core” curriculum into schools. Below is a real assignment from a 6th grade class in Bryant School District in Arkansa. The assignment says, “You have been selected to work on a National Revised Bill of Rights Task Force. You have been charged with the task of revising and editing the Bill of Rights. .. You will have to prioritize, prune, and add amendments.”

Common Core Revise the Bill of Rights

These students have not been taught what the Constitution or the Bill of Rights mean or how they came to be. They have not been taught to appreciate their remarkable and extraordinary place in the history of world governments or how well they have worked for more than two centuries. They have also not been taught the mechanism provided by the Constitution for properly amending the Constitution.

The child whose mother posted this assignment said her daughter had no idea what the amendments meant or why the class had been assigned to throw out two old ones and invent two new ones. She only knew she’d been told to do it, so she had to do it. Oddly, the assignment reassures students that it’s okay to disagree; however, they cannot complete the assignment unless and until every single person assigned to their committee agrees!

Meanwhile, an AP American History review book presents a faux version of the Constitution.
