  1. The purpose of the Second Amendment is to arm people in order to prevent future tyranny. They need the tools to do this.

The term “Well Regulated” in the Second Amendment meant “Well Manned and Equipped ” in 1791 as was determined in the 1939 United States v. Miller case after referencing the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. The concept of Government Regulation, as we understand it today, did not exist at the time.

United States v. Miller also determined that the term “Arms” refers to “Ordinary Military Weapons” (not crew operated). American Citizens have the right to Keep and Bear, which means Own and Carry, any weapons that a soldier carries into battle. That includes past, present and future weapons. A Militia consisted of armed volunteers willing to fight with their personal arms and not under government control.

To limit the Second Amendment to muskets would be the equivalent of limiting the First Amendment to writings in quill pens.

Liberty is worth the risk of death!

Great post. Your very last statement was, for me, a very important one. It seems that the left, and big government proponents are always trying to legislate risks away. If you wear your seatbelt, you are less likely to die in a crash, so they mandate the use of seat belts.

It comes down to a fundamental difference in how we view the role of government. The left believes that it is the government’s responsibility to keep the populace from taking risks, and to ensure equality across the board. On the conservative side, we view risk as a natural part of life; people must be free to take risks, and therefore reap the rewards or consequences.

Write legislation that gets rid of risk, and you essentially eliminate the freedom on which our nation was founded! Not only is freedom eliminated, but so is the natural competition that made our nation the strongest, wealthiest and most sought-after place to live and do business! It’s simple cause and effect! The blind hubris of these big government, control-freak wackos, thinking they can change the natural laws and re-engineer the human experience is astounding!

      • Amen to what Violet said. Utopians always rely on coercion; what they hope to achieve is impossible without it, since they’re trying to repeal human nature.

As others have pointed out, Barack Obama had it exactly wrong when he claimed his job was to keep Americans safe. No, Barry, that isn’t the job of the president. Your job is to keep Americans FREE. And at that you’ve been a miserable failure.

Thanks, Pocono. I have not seen this so simply and clearly stated before.

Just got this from a bloggy lister: “It’s happening everywhere and very frustrating for us. We need to restock our ammo supply and it is sold out EVERYWHERE!”
