“Put a tiger in your tank” was apparently aired in the Philippines in the 70s, because my brother lived there and said he didn’t have to learn much of the language to get taxi drivers to take him where he wanted to go. All he needed to do was say, “Put a tiger in your tank”, in the local language and show the address written on a piece of paper. They thought it was so funny, they always took him right where he wanted without any “fleece the dumb tourist by taking the long way” detours. πŸ™‚

[Yes, I do realize that Tony the Tiger was a cereal ad while the other was a gasoline ad. Just thought it was funny and wanted to share.]

Thanks, Pete! Last weekend my son rented a tour bus and we all pitched in and took a “Tacky Lights Tour” of Richmond. My husband and I were the only ones over 30 on the bus, but it was a lot of fun, and we saw some amazing places. Nothing to quite compare with these videos, though!

Merry Christmas to you all. I just had 20 for lunch today, and then a few more for cocktails. Tomorrow will be another 20 for dinner, 14 for brunch on Christmas Day, and then on the 26th is Mr. Ting’s big birthday – 60! I can’t think about that party yet! I am so keyed up that I can’t fall asleep, which rarely happens to me. I usually go so hard I’m out like a light – one of the more positive aspects of manual labor.

I probably won’t have a chance to check in for a few days, but know I am wishing you all wonderful celebrations with those you love.

And then there’s me at the other end of the spectrum. Dearest got out one of our nativity sets and set it up. (I of course then felt compelled to rearrange it all, which he approved of and I bet it was his sneaky plan to get me to do SOMETHING Christmassy this year!)

Dearest is going to his clan gathering this evening so me and the poos will be on our own for a couple days. 2 are staying in their own house cuz it’s like a bazillion miles from nowhere. 4 of the kids are going to their in laws, cuz it’s closer, but 2 of those will be in some cellular wasteland where they can barely even do email.

The other 2 called last night during their long drive, so we opened their presies to us, which were amazing! They bought these cool glass blocks that had holds drilled in the bottom and nifty black wire racks to sit on. They painted our monogram on the front, stuffed little white Christmas lights up inside and wrapped around the outside with a red and gold ribbon and bow. It makes a wonderful nightlight in our dark, windowless foyer where we really need one 24-7, cuz the stairs are too dark to be safe even at high noon.

They also picked up a little something extra cuz they saw it at some Christmassy thing they went to and it was just so “GOTTA get this for Mom!!” I love love love Madonna and angel art work … any kind. I’ve been collecting since I was a kid.

Obviously, nativity scenes are a must! It’s what I asked for when we got married; my mom was doing ceramics classes then and she made us a GORGEOUS all-white porcelain one. The girls and I made one one year out of spools and fabric and junk jewelry. Another year, the girls set one up with their troll dolls that is still one of my favorites.

Each girl also acquired a “Big Present This Year” nativity set of choice so they’d have one when they moved out. The art teacher in their Catholic elementary school was really gifted and did wonderful ceramic sets to sell at the bazaar. The one we set up this year is the Christmas Pageant one; darling kids dressed up and the animals are their pets.

This one actually belongs to one of the girls, but she hasn’t taken it yet. I should probably remind her one of these days. The first year we had one in harm’s way for Christmas, we set this one up and put a GI Joe doll and an American flag above it for the angel. Not exactly “kosher” but it felt exactly right.

I also got each girl a darling miniature ceramic set for their kids that they won’t be able to play with, so Mama Buzz got B&B the Fisher Price set which they can. It’s fantastic! Spreads out over the entire coffee table.

Anyway, point being … I. Love. Nativity. Sets. I also love miniatures and have a big dollhouse (5 stories tall), a smaller one (mid-19th c. British cottage), plus umpteen room boxes I’ve built and decorated for the girls, plus even more 1″ and 1/2″ porcelain dolls I’ve built, posed, dressed etc.

Obviously, when the Monkeys saw an alabaster egg (about 1 1/2″ tall) that had been carved out on the inside into a perfect wee little Nativity … it was a no brainer. If I get bored while Dearest is away, I’ll try to scan or photo it. It’s so wee … not sure if I can do it justice.

Anyhoops, y’all have fun with your families. I’m fine here. Quite content to have a couple days to myself with my books, movies, poodles and, if Bob isn’t too busy, some Scrabble. πŸ™‚

    • I’ll definitely have time for Scrabble, especially now that the Christmas Eve service is over! It’s the biggest musical extravaganza of the year, and I always look forward to it with a combination of excitement and dread… excitement because it’s so much fun, and dread because it’s so much work. Anyway, it’s over now, it went well, and I’m exhausted. It’s late and I need to get to bed… my middle daughter and her husband, and my son and his girlfriend and her two kids, are all coming for dinner tomorrow. The teenager is going to help me by giving the house a quick (i.e., superficial) cleaning and getting the tree decorated (it’s up and it has lights on it, but no one has had time to decorate it!), and I’m going to make a very simple Christmas dinner — no time or energy to get fancy, but luckily my family likes simple food. The teenager already baked a ton of cookies, and we’re going to make homemade ice cream (my specialty, because it’s fast, easy, and foolproof), so we’ll have cookies and ice cream for dessert. Should be fun! I’ll be checking in throughout the day to see if it’s my turn in Scrabble. πŸ™‚
