I have a friend who is a retired Lutheran minister, a very tall, solid man with snow-white hair and a full snow-white beard. One day when he was out Christmas shopping, he saw an exhausted young mother struggling with a small child who was in the midst of a major meltdown. My friend stopped for a moment, got the child’s attention, looked him in the eye, and said seriously, “Don’t you know I’m watching to see who’s being good and who’s being bad?” The child ceased his tantrum immediately, and the mother looked at my friend with infinite gratitude and said “Thank you!”

I feel sorry for the poor kids. I hated school with a passion and six hours a day, 180 days a year was bad enough. The day I finally finished serving my sentence was the happiest day of my life. I never wanted to see the inside of a classroom again as long as I lived.

I loved school. I was good at it, so got good grades and respect. Before and after school, I was just a lonely kid who was reminded constantly what a burden and a nuisance my existence was.
