“We thank thee for the privilege of living as free men in a country which respects our freedom and our personal rights to worship and think and speak as we choose” This was true in then as long as you are not a woman, black, Jewish etc. etc…

“I wish there was some way I could tell the kids not to believe it. The dialogue, the situations, the characters they were all totally false. The show did everyone a disservice. The girls were always trained to use their feminine wiles, to pretend to be helpless to attract men. The show contributed to a lot of the problems between men and women that we see today. . . . I think we were all well motivated, but what we did was run a hoax”. Billy Gray “Bud Anderson”

Whereas today’s enlightened television women are career-obsessed control freaks on starvation diets, who wear designer clothes no regular woman could afford with arthritis-inducing spike heels that cost 2 months wages.

They inject botox and get plastic surgery so they can become and stay “sexy” enough to attract equally shallow men in bars with whom they hop into bed after the first drink, then wake up the next morning not remembering or never having known the name of the person with whom they shared baby-making body fluids.

Yeah. I can see where that’s so much “better” and so very “different” from 1950s shows where girls were trained to use their feminine wiles and pretend to be helpless to attract men. Especially that whole part where the 1950s shows were about attracting husbands and staying chaste until after the vows, so there wouldn’t be any babies happening where there weren’t two parents already in a committed relationship to provide a stable two-parent home. Cuz THAT was just so awful.

I think what Billy Gray “Bud Anderson” was pointing out is that it was the same back then. It’s just that it was not talked about and kept it covered up. The only thing that kept it off TV was the censors. What kept it out of the news was the family and church too embarrassed to talk about it so it was kept better contained behind closed doors back then. Just because at one time no one dared to expose or refused to believe the Coach and Priest were pedophiles does not mean that it was not happening.

Anonymous — I grew up in Detroit in the sixties, in a neighborhood that was about ten years behind the “modern times”, a ethnic neighborhood which was predominately Catholic. Life for most families was right out tv-land. Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, The Patty Duke Show, and the rest of them could have been modeled after the majority of two-parent, stable homes. It did exist and when things got tough for these families it was the strength of this stability that trained these families in courage, openness, honesty to deal with the crisis — all the time seeing the glass as half full and life a celebration of women, of men, of children, of God, of neighborhood, of diversity. It did exist even if a bitter, morally deficit Hollywood actor thought it was just imaginary.

And I may add not only did it exist but was a living painting of the beauty of diversity. A neighbor house was owned and shared by two elderly ladies that had lived there for about twenty-five years. Everyone loved them. We children were encouraged to include them in Mother’s Day, in Christmas, in stopping over to visit with them, and to love them. These “oppressed women” and “chauvinist men” included them in all the couple parties and trusted their children with these two ladies, who has been before retirement, superb business women. I used to travel with my mom to visit one of the ladies after she was put in a nursing home. As an adult, realized the two women were lesbians and all the adults knew it. Love and friendship . . .

“As an adult, realized the two women were lesbians and all the adults knew it” The cover-up by the Neighbors and Church that I mentioned before. You just made my point. Just flip it over to the perverted Coach or Priest that everyone knew about, but only whispered it behind closed doors back then. What about the mothers that did not want their children exposed to an alternate live style back then, but had not heard the whispers? The purest (not I) would only say you are tolerant today to gay/Lez life style only because your were exposed to them as a child.

Straight out…The shows were only fantasy just like Orwell’s 1984. Just enough truth in both to sell the concept. Coaches and Priest were molesting children back then right under Barney Fife’s nose just the same as they do today, only now people are more willing to stand up and do something. They can openly talk about it instead of only whisper about it confession. Better?

                • Sorry, Charlie. In the 50s, molesting children was a capital offense. They fried in the chair after one offense. And since unpleasant death is actually a deterrent, despite what your friends claim, it was actually pretty rare then. The numbers we know about seem to bear that out. This has been mainly a post-sexual-revolution problem. Again, thank your liberal friends for that. Unhappily, being an involved lay Catholic, I know the numbers about priests “molesting children,” and it was a homosexual problem (NOT pedophilia/children), with problem priests being tolerated too long and too much. We all bear the shame for that. Too much tolerance. Sound familiar? Problem of the 50s? Hmmmm. What you don’t read often is that for every priest accused in the 70s or 80s, there were 100 times that many accusations in public schools. Not just a Catholic problem, but still a post-sexual-revolution problem. Your ball. Your court.

Sorry not buying it… There were many books burned that were once written by the experts of the 50’s The were deeply involved in the church. “In the 1950’s certain analytic therapists felt that children not only unconsciously desired sexual assault, but were responsible for the occurrence. These previous theories have impacted our professional community for years, and have changed drastically since the 1950’s, 60’s and even early 70’s.”

Can you not see The perfect circle. If the experts told you back then (and the church accepted the expert words because they were in many cases members of the church). Then your child was molested because they asked for it and you kept your mouth shut because you were now shamed in the eyes of the church.

Step back a few years more years and the church was still burning witches at the stake because they dared to speak out.

What am I missing here — were any of the shows we mentioned about the Catholic Church and priests? Perhaps my description of my childhood neighborhood as Catholic started the “cross-dressing” of the two topics? Surely, priest /child molestation problems in the Catholic Church structure of Church and School does not negate the stability created from healthy families and neighborhoods that did, indeed, reflect the television shows and make all from these areas dreamers, dillusional, uniniformed……..

I find it very offensive and frustrating, even though I am not Catholic as an adult, to have bitterness and drama thrown into any discussion that mentions the good fruits of growing up in America as a Catholic. It is higly singleminded, self-absorbed, and controlling to keep throwing that up. A nice, feel good grudge being dominated by……….a grudge……..how ironic.

A guy in a white robe raised me up then tried to drowned me. When he raised me up again. I peed all over him and everyone said Amen! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. At least that was the way it was relayed later to me years later, LOL

“Please accept my apology as well for missing the feel good Grudge intent.” (Anon 2:34)
How dare you attempt to include me in your bitterness tirade. How dare you act clueless at what I was saying. You know perfectly well I was NOT missing the point of the feel good Grudge intent but how someone turned a fun, upbeat, comedy/joke thread into a dumping zone for baggage against all things Catholic, which by some of your descriptions you actually have limited experience with. (Been to hundreds of Catholic baptisms and never saw a guy in a white robe). That little phrase “as well” puts me in the same mission to use and to distort every opportunity to evangelize the world to an anger, bitterness, disgust, hate, and all things negative toward the Catholic Church and/or Christian virtues/issues labled by political leftists as vile. I was not apologizing for my words that you say are as yours, ” “Please accept my apology as well for missing the feel good Grudge intent.” Where did I apologize? As well? For missing the intent of the Grudge? You know perfectly well what I meant and, being trained in cult mindset recovery, which almost always involve a pschotic leader/s, I pick up on manipulative rearranging or words and phrases for control in an attempt to change not just opinions but loyalties and even one’s self. Everyone here KNOWS who I am and what my core essense is, so you may as well drop the manipulitive reimaging to present me in agreement with you. You attempts are futile. Waste of time. You are not as smart as you think you are being. You are all too transparent.

You are obviously hurting, whether it be real or imagined, whether it be from being victimized or programmed, and there is no healing to be found dumping out the pain on comment threads. You would have better success in the real, live world of professionals. Please, in the future, fight your own battles and do not victimize me as you war your demons in cyberspace. You have an opinion. Stand on it all by your lonesome. Don’t use me to give you creditbility. Thank you veddy mooch.

We children never knew that adults preferred same sex. Two ladies together was adult information. No one ever spoke of it to the children and we had no clue as to “alternative lifestyle”, we never asked or wondered about them living together. The adults knew but obviously the ladies did not try to override the traditional family by ‘educating’ us. To me, call me outdated, but I actually think it was healthier for society and children especially not knowing about all the gay stuff. As for the mothers (and fathers) who did not want their children there, there probably were some that made that choice. We were taught to show respect for them as elderly and thus would help carry their groceries or shovel their snow or take a plate of cookies over. They always said thank you and gave us a peppermint. If it was near dark, we kids would meet them at the bus stop and walk them the two blocks home. The adults may have suspected and not have approved but that did not cause them to see respect and neighborliness and Christian love as needing to be withheld or withdrawn. I suspose it was sort of a society imposed “don’t ask, don’t tell” sort of thing.

I can’t believe you posted this.
At Thanksgiving dinner we were discussing how Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver were such good shows for kids of my generation.
For someone like me, who had a very disfunctional family, watching these shows helped me to see a kind of family life I could aspire to have. TV Dads were role models for those of us who had fathers who were not very good examples. They helped me to decid what kind of man I wanted to marry someday, and I did marry one who had the same honesty and integrity as the 50’s guys.
It is so sad that there are even more kids today than in my day who come from broken homes, and they do not have these old fashioned guys to look up to on TV. Instead they have all these sit coms with smart ass kids and bumbling fools for Dads, and un “reality” shows where people treat each other horribly and use a vocabulary that is limited to four letter words that my generation had never even heard (even in our disfunctional homes).

Oh my gosh – this was like a lightbulb going off in my head GP. I was blessed to grow up in a very normal, happy family and we are all still very close and have a lot of fun together. But I realize after reading this what some of those shows (and the experience of being with my family, too) might have had on a couple of my friends who had less secure home lives than I. And though I do not watch television today, I wonder if there are any shows that might show a different option to troubled kids today. Especially those who might live in neighborhoods where most every household is dysfunctional. Maybe they are still out there, but I don’t watch enough to know.

I think we most of us feel a warm place in the heart for those shows because we were still young, insulated and protected and still unaware or unconcerned with the cruel world going on outside the safe confines of our home and neighborhood. Not a big TV fan, but I think kids today are growing up faster and quickly turn away from shows that look nothing like the life they live. You can add to the list of good old Shows. The Walton’s, Little House… etc.

My modern children love Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, FKB, etc., They marvel at how “risque” they actually were (like how young kids went to dances and on dates with parents encouraging it) and don’t get why everyone says they were so wholesome. Sort of goes with my other comment to Anon — STABILITY has been portrayed as a negative and oppressive and idyllic…fantasy land. They WERE realistic shows in so many ways. In every generation there are Beavers, Wallys, Eddie Haskell’s, Barneys, Opies, Aunt Beas. They are alive and well, celebrating family, friends, community, families, and stability.

Wonder who the first Bert and Ernie were?

        • anonymous

According to the net: “Ernie and Bert were built by Don Sahlin from a simple design scribbled by Jim Henson, creator of The Muppets. Initially, Henson performed Bert and Oz performed Ernie, but after just one day of rehearsal, they switched characters. According to writer Jon Stone, the relationship between Ernie and Bert reflected the real-life friendship between Henson and Oz”

          • That’s cool! I think GP was also musing about the original Bert and Ernie (cop and cab driver) in the Frank Capra movie, on which Henson and Oz apparently based their muppets. I suppose maybe there was a Bert and Ernie somewhere in upstate NY that triggered the thought.

In that case from the same source: “”Characters named Ernie and Bert appear in the film It’s a Wonderful Life as a taxi driver and a policeman, respectively, but those behind Sesame Street claim that it is merely a coincidence. Jerry Juhl, a writer on many Henson-related projects, said, “Despite his many talents, Jim had no memory for details like this. He knew the movie, of course, but would not have remembered the police officer and the cabdriver.””

I can’t imagine that Jim Henson did not see It’s A Wonderful Life dozens of times, just like the rest of us. All of those characters are unforgettable. I always assumed he named his muppets after the original.
Speaking of Jim Henson. Another trivia fact is that he died of a heart attack right after having dental surgery. I have been to many talks in the past few years about the dangers of dental procedures, mercury, fluoride, etc. Did you know that there is a bacteria in our mouthts that is linked to sudden heart attacks? That is why root canals are so dangerous. That bacteria gets covered up when the tooth is capped and even though there is no pain, the infection may fester for years. This not only causes the immune system to be on constant overdrive, this bacteria can create havoc with one’s health, causing everything from cancer to heart attacks. This very well could have been why Jim Henson died so suddenly, when he as healthy and young, from a heart attack.
I found out about all this when I started reading about the link to breast cancer and root canals. When I finally decided to have my root canal tooth extracted, after several opinions from biological dentists, it was all black at the bottom. Yuck! I had had this bacteria festering for decades!
The morals of the story are,
only trust a biological dentist. They are trained to look for this infection when others aren’t.
Do not get any root canals, and if you have them, consider removing them. If you are having chronic health issues, your teeth might be culprit.
This bacteria connection should be considered in sudden heart attacks.

There’s also the problematic little factoid that genes are not the whole story. They’ve spliced eye genes from a fly into a mouse and it develops a mouse eye, not a fly eye. They’ve also coded the entire human genome and there’s a lot of necessary info missing. IOW, it’s stored somewhere else, not in DNA. And that “junk dna”? Not junk. It’s code info, exactly the same as geeks write into computer programs.

Where does an unmarried student with an A average and a passel of kids find time and energy to date anyway? Unless maybe she dumped those kids on some relative, because you know, getting married and caring for your own kids full time like her mom did would have been so demeaning.

“Bussed in on charter busses” … riiiiiiiiiiight, “diverse” group BUSSED in. Sheesh. “I make $8.30 an hour.” At least you have a job, jerk. And how much are you getting paid to ride a bus and walk around chanting?

So far as I know, Walmart hasn’t done anything to hurt anybody. They’ve just managed to keep the stinking Big Unions out. Being unionized is supposed to be a free choice for the workers, not something Big Unions impose. They’ve become what they were originally created to fight.

I bet they were all told not to talk to any reporters, cuz at previous gigs like this, we got clips of them admitting they were being paid to be there.

Better hang onto that dumb phone. I have been trying to find a new one because my old one is falling apart, but all they have are the smart ass phones. I do not want one for the internet. I do not want to text. I just want one that I can use to talk to people on and has big numbers so I can see them.
When I was at the store today, looking at the new phones, the sales guy looked at me like I was a alien when I told him I wanted a new dumb phone.
LOL PP, we do think alike.

That’s a crack up… Not sure the ultraconservative would approve this Disney’s children’s programming content in the 50’s.

I would hope not. The pointy thing up the back end is creepy as hell. It brought up memories of Lord of the Flies, which is definitely not something I’d want little ones exposed to. I’m hoping this was a satire aimed at adults, not an actual Muppet show.

Though maybe not. I hate the Muppet’s value system, kept my kids away from them after I saw the Kermit-Piggy wedding duet, “He’ll/She’ll make me happy.” As if that’s what marriage is about. Sheesh. No marriage could possibly survive long with the burden of, “YOU have to make me happy.”

I think Jan. is going to be tough. One Immaculation was bad enough. I can’t believe we have to go throught that again. I am sure the minions will trash the mall again.
Maybe we should declare January an obo free month, where we do not even utter any variation of his name, post any pictures of him or mooch, and ignore every news bit involving him.
Unless of course, they decide to impeach him over Benghazi (we can dream at least).

Well, this may end up being good news. At dinner last night there was a young woman there who is a staffer for Rep. Steve King from Iowa (you know, Michelle Bachman’s buddy.) She said that it is up to Boehner, but King is due to be a committee chair, and the two possibilities are the committee on immigration, or the one on agriculture. The part about agriculture that this young, very conservative woman was excited about is that it is the committee in charge of food stamps.

She said we should all be concerned that the country is actually being run by 25 to 30 year olds who make about $65,000 a year, which sounds like a lot, but I don’t think it really is if you have to live in the DC area. Rents are astronomical there. They stay a few years and then out they go – to work for the lobbyists on K Street, where they make a ton of money and come back to the Hill and call on all the contacts they made when they were staffers. They actually do the real work of writing the bills, etc. but they all just consider it a stepping stone to K Street, so few stay long enough for any real wisdom.

I thoroughly enjoyed talking to her. I remember when she was born…..

Thanks for the inside the beltway scoop.
I sure hope the House holds this regime accountable. If they continue to be the party of stupid, and fearful of criticizing the WON Again, then there will be no future for the GOP or for the USA.
What an interesting cross section of folks we have here.
