SUMMARY: The real cause of heart disease is inflammation in the artery walls. The cholesterol theory that led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations caused Americans to change their diets to the very foods that cause inflammation in the artery walls! What should we eat? Read the article.

I believe this article is true, based on my family’s experiences with coronary artery disease but always with low cholesterol levels, which doctors could never explain. Even when my Dad was in hospital needing a quadruple bypass, his cholesterol levels were then, and had been, around 100.

My mother, who has never had heart disease, has very high (close to 300) cholesterol, in spite of a diet that should not lead to it.

I just decided to eat what I like, and so far so good, but I tend to like the things in this article. I like a “colorful” plate of vegetables, especially in the summer.

Dearest has a genetic defect of a valve that has led two of his previous generation (mother, aunt) to have valve replacement surgery. He wants no part of it, so embarked on a heart-healthy lifestyle.

He doesn’t like the things in the article, preferring the diet he was raised on minus the hard work his mom put into raising and serving lots of fresh and home frozen vegetables. Eggs for breakfast. Ham and cheese for lunch. Pasta, bread and ice cream for dinner.

Years ago, we were all tested for food allergies and he fought me every step of the way on changing from the things he’s allergic to … eggs, dairy, wheat … to healthier choices. NOW that the issue is “heart surgery OR do what the male doctor you chose tells you” … he’s doing what I’ve been trying to get him to do for 30 years!

Argh. Men. On the plus side, since he does the grocery shopping and cooking now, his health kick is helping me a LOT. It’s a lot easier to grab an apple instead of snitching ice cream when I’m having a snack attack when the apples are there and the ice cream is not! LOL

I made an order for 2 bottles of Birds Nest soup (http://hongkong-bird-nest.50webs.com/index_e.htm) as well as 4 packets of Chinese tea that’s supposed to be good for regulating cholestrol. My mom’s cholestrol has been pretty high lately, or so she tells me.
