In 2008, the split was such that even if all the Non-Leaners (10%) voted with the Republican/Republic-Leaners (39%), it still wasn’t enough to beat the Democrat/Democrat-Leaners (51%). Now, the D/D-Ls only have a 5% advantage, with the Non-Leaners polling at 9%. Even if we split the Nons, we’ve still got a close, close race.

The largest single congregation (nearly one in four) in the United States is Catholic (23.9%). The largest group by type is Evangelical (26.3%). Add these two groups and you end up with HALF of all American Adults self-identifying as members of doctrinally conservative Christian churches.
Also, more American Adults self-identify as Mormon (1.7%) or Jewish (1.7%) than self-identify as Atheist (1.6%). You have to add Buddhists and Hindus to Muslims before you get enough non-Judaeo-Christian religious members (1.7%) to match EITHER the Mormons OR the Jews.

Nearly one in four American Adults self-identifies as Catholic. Even more are Evangelical. Together, these two groups comprise 50% of American Adults. Obama and his cadre of anti-religion Leftists have managed to make 11% shift from Democrat to Republican. And this shift was measured BEFORE Obama’s HHS set off the January 2012 Catholics-Against-Obama firestorm.
As Bob so eloquently put it, “Obama really stepped in it this time.”
