Remembering Star

This is one of my unfinished Christmas presents … a quilted wall-hanging for the Corporals. Once I get Star’s face right, I’ll cut away the white backing and quilt her on to the sky background, then add a sleeve at the top so they can hang it off a rod.

Ditto! I did one face that was awful … ripped it all off (the loose pieces are lightly tacked down with dots of acid-free, water-soluble glue). I’m trying something a little different now … going much more slowly and focusing on just one area of color in the face at a time.

This is a new technique for me, using freezer paper, which has a wax coating that, when ironed, sticks the paper to the fabric long enough to cut an accurate fabric piece. It works well, but for the face, I really have to go more slowly … make just one piece at a time, leave the paper sitting in place until I’m confident it’s the right shape.

Then I choose the right bit of fabric, iron, cut out, peel, place, and wait again. If I walk past it enough times and keep seeing Star, I glue it down. Corporal K loved this dog so much and is so excited about the quilt. I gotta get it right!
