As far as get a job and take a bath…..

Some are saying how cruel it is that Newt would say that when jobs are so scarce. It reminds me of last winter, when an older man came to my door asking if he could shovel my driveway. The year before he had been struck by a car and left to die, but he lived and had been out of work during his rehabilitation. He could walk again and he was going door to door to get jobs shoveling driveways. He told me all of this after he had already gotten the job, could have been total bs, for all I know. But the point is, he had a shovel, I had snow that needed shoveling, this man twice my age was out there making money doing something I didn’t want to do. He came back again but at 20 dollars a drive I couldn’t keep hiring him (and my hubby was a little annoyed that I paid someone to do it when he could have done it when he got home!).
It’s tough out there, I get that. But that’s the only person I’ve seen come through our neighborhood offering a service for money. If you are able bodied get creative and make it happen. In the summer mow lawns for cheap, wash cars for a good deal, rake leaves, whatever! Do the best job possible and make it a deal for all involved. I grew up with a dad who consistently worked 60-80 hours a week during my childhood. I didn’t resent him; I respected him. He busted his ass working for himself so we could have a lower middle class lifestyle and I will always remember that.

So, I am guessing your Dad was not a director/drama major. He sounds like a great Dad!

LOL! Nope! Enlisted in the Coast Guard after high school (the army recruiters were out to lunch; Coast Guard people saw my dad waiting down the hall and snagged him). Took some classes at a community college but dropped out to work. Worked various jobs – he even volunteered for a time for the KCPD, overnight work in baaaad neighborhoods – and then when the company he was working as a carpet salesman was no longer going to make payroll, my dad took a huge risk and started his own carpet installation company. Later, my parents bought a commercial carpet cleaning franchise and my dad did both. I have fond memories of going out as a family to office buildings and cleaning together in the early days. My dad is semi-retired now, however, he keeps pretty busy when his body allows it. He’s a great dad.

          SERIOUSLY?! roflll A MAJORETTE?? snort

Dee – My dad also had a carpet cleaning business. There was only one other in town. Mom asked and asked and asked for our carpets to get done, but you know, the cobbler’s kids yada yada. Finally, she threatened to call the competitor. The potential for “We even clean THEIR carpets” ads finally got the crew up to our house. LOL

I am so tired tonight I can hardly type. It was the leaf raking weekend – the big one, I hope. We have been raking for the last few weeks, but this was a killer. I hope the worst of it is over, but it still seems like a lot of leaves left on the trees. We have to bag them all up and leave the bags at the curb and the county comes by to pick them up. Bags of wet leaves are heavy!!! There must be 200 bags in front of my house. Okay, I’ll stop whining now.

There was a fire last night across the street from my son’s new house (in a nice neighborhood.) It turns out there was a meth lab in there. Good grief. I never would have guessed that in that particular neighborhood. At least the fire might be the end of that particular enterprise, forever I hope.

I got a call first thing this morning that one of my employees, a woman younger than I, had a stroke and is in the ICU. She is strong as an ox, and has none of the habits that might make one susceptible to a stroke, but there she is nevertheless. We have worked together for over 20 years and naturally we are good friends by now. I think that she is going to be okay. Cognitively she is fine, and she had enough dexterity to send me an e-mail from her iphone, so that is all good. She will have another 24 hours in the ICU to get her past the danger point and then we shall see. She makes her living climbing up and down ladders, so I am praying that it will all be okay.

I am looking forward to receiving my copy of Throw Them All Out. I think this is going to be a big deal. When you have 60 Minutes and Newsweek working on the revelations in a book by a conservative author, that is being heavily promoted by Andrew Breitbart, I think you may have something to shake it all up. I will be able to talk about it at Thanksgiving with even my liberal relatives – it is a bipartisan outrage. That is, if I have time to talk to them, between cooking and washing dishes!

I am definitely going to quit griping about the horrific sound the leaf sucker makes. Where we live, they only ask we get the leaves into the roadside ditches. Then they come back with a big honkin’ machine that looks like it should put stars on Sneetches and sounds like the vacuum cleaner from hell. I had never given a thought before to how much easier it is than bagging!

Prayers for your employee. May she recover fully and return to the work she clearly loves. Amen.
